  Artist GREGORY STEPHEN FRIEDLER, a renowned photographer and portrait artist died in Denver on Feb. 2, 2015. He was 44. Freidler, a native of New Orleans, was a noted avant-garde artist whose speciality was in capturing nudes. His "Naked" series of photographs began 16 years ago with "Naked Los Angeles" and "Naked New York," a series of diptychs in which average persons were first shown clothed and then nude, identified only by age and profession. His entry in the series titled "Naked London" was released next as part of a film documentary shot for airing over the BBC. He also followed with a book titled "Mattress" in which nude subjects posed on a mattress. Most recently he was involved in another film documentary project showcasing his passionate life's work titled "America Stripped: Naked Las Vegas," that was shown over the Showtime Channel for a period of two years before being released on video in 2012. Friedler was also a devotee of yoga and became an instructor. He also enjoyed skiing, playing tennis and meditating. After growing up in New Orleans, he attended Rocky Mountain School and graduated from the University of Colorado with a bachelor's degree in political science and French. Friedler traveled to the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he received his Master's of Fine Arts degree. He began his career as a painter, favoring portraits of subjects, but quickly embraced the medium of photography with its capacity to capture subjects in both black and white and color. As an artist, he enjoyed stripping away the veneer of life's players and capturing their essence. He possessed a keen wit and a sharp sense of humor. Friedler still continued to paint throughout his lifetime, capturing still life subjects and landscapes of many of the far off places he visited. He published six monographs, specialized oversized works that included special photos and his commentaries. His art work was shown in galleries and venues around the world, particularly across the United States and Europe. Friedler is survived by his parents Cecile and Gerald Friedler, his brother David (Shawna) of Danville, CA. and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews and a niece.
