- Cinematographer. Born Jay Gayne Rescher on December 19, 1924 in New York City, New York, son of silent film star Jean Tolley and cinematographer Jay Rescher, who was instrumental in founding the first union to include cinematographers.
He is known for his work on "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (1982), "The Day After" (1983) and "A Face in the Crowd" (1957).
He attended the American Theater School in New York, after serving as a fighter pilot in WW II. He switched from acting and joined the photographers' union, quickly finding a love for cinematography. He received three Primetime Emmy Awards for cinematography; "Moviola" (1980), "Shooter" (1989) and "Lucky/Chances" (1991) starring Sandra Bullock and Nicolette Sheridan. He also earned five Primetime Emmy nominations. He won two cinematography awards from the American Society of Cinematographers for "Single Women Married Men" (1990) and "Lucky/Chances" (1991) along with two nominations. His list of films include more than 50 mini-series and TV movies.
He was married three times. His first wife was Broadway actress Ottilie Kruger, daughter of actor Otto Kruger. His second wife was Darlene Agnes Keane, who died of lung cancer. His third wife was Gail Ferguson. He had three daughters with Ottilie Kruger; entrepreneur/director Gaye Rescher; actress DeeDee Rescher and Deborah Jean Rescher.
He died on February 29, 2008 in Gig Harbor, Washington, following a long illness.
